Explication as a way of translation of non-equivalent vocabulary in scientific and technical literature

The article deals with lexical difficulties that arise when translating scientific and technical literature. The characteristics of explication as a means of adequate understanding of non-equivalent vocabulary in a foreign language source have been analyzed. In scientific and technical texts exactly one can meet specialized terminology that in translation has no direct analogues, and therefore the main task of the translator of technical literature is a pragmatic adaptation of the original text with maximum preservation of its form and content. The role of translation in the course of training reading and understanding foreign specialized literature is determined, grade levels are analyzed and kinds of translation that are reasonable for applying each of them are outlined. The attempt to group the main varieties of explication based on the lexical meaning of the word in a particular context has been made, the advantages and disadvantages of each have been analyzed. The recommendations on the use of explication in teaching students of non-linguistic universities translation of scientific and technical texts have been suggested. The question of the increase of learning efficiency of a foreign language in technical college and forming students’ skills of using a foreign language for practical work in their speciality is touched upon.
