THE ARTICLE OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE IN THE CONTEXT: THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL INTERPRETATIONS

Abstract

This paper deals with the peculiarities of the article in the German language and with the problems of learning the article in language teaching. Many investigators consider the article as a complicated grammatical phenomenon of the German language. The contradictions connected with the definition of the place and functions of the article in the language depend in particular on the fields of its investigations.

In the linguistics the article is investigated for solving various problems in the fields of history and theory of language, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, comparative philology etc.

In the field of methods of language teaching the functions of the article are considered with educational purposes to give language knowledge for practical communications.

So the article as an element of language can be considered both with theoretical and with practical purposes depending on tasks of concrete investigations. This paper investigates also peculiarities of various stages of language teaching and the place of the article in them.

On the initial stage of language teaching the forms of the article and the main grammatical rules of its application have to be learned. On the second stage it is necessary to know the main grammatical rules of the German language and the vocabulary sufficient to read original texts. On this stage the application of the article depends on context, speech situation, intentions of authors of concrete texts.

On the stage of improvement of language skills the application of the article can be considered as a stylistic device to reach expressiveness of text, to create aesthetic forms in the sentence, to emphasize important individual words in the text etc.
